THE CONNECTIONS
"I think I was probably a lot like McCandless; just as green, just as eager" (Krakauer 186).
The similarities between people
This quote shows that people knew McCandless and were close to him. He made a lot of connections with people. The impact he had on some showed his adventurous side and how driven he was. I think this is why people were so affected by his death. In the short amount of time he was in Alaska, he made some friends that learned from him.

YOU DON'T NEED COLLEGE
"Early in his senior year Woodson, Chris informed his parents that he ha no intention of going to college... Chris answered that careers were demeaning "twentieth-century inventions"' (Krakauer 114).
You need college to get a good career
Chris McCandless never really had the same traditional outlook on careers and life as his parents. He found college necessary and careers "demeaning inventions". McCandless wanted to make his own life instead of someone laying it out for him. He wanted to be his own person and really didn't want to conform to society's (and his parents') views on career. That is why he "ran away" and traveled all over the states by himself.

McCANDLESS FOUND DEAD
"When McCandless turned up dead in Alaska and the perplexing circumstances of his demise were reported in the news media, many people concluded that the boy must have been mentally disturbed" (Krakauer 70).
Assumptions
The people who saw the news and saw that McCandless had died thought he was crazy. People go to that initial assumption because they usually don't know the entire story. They would base it off the little bit of information they had acquired from the news. If a man hiked Stampede Trail alone, without the proper gear, and not knowing the trail completely, he would be seen as mentally ill. His actions and choices were not justified so people had to fill in the blank themselves. To make that decision is so absurd to the Alaskan people that no "normal" person would do such a thing.
